Juan Molinet - rey misterio

Hello Juan and thank you for doing this interview with Colovision Magazine.

1 – To Start, tellus a bit about yourself where you were born and where you live…
Well, I was born in San Miguel, 30 kilometers away from Buenos Aires, but always studied and worked in the big city, so I recently moved to a nice and cozy apartment in Palermo, a nice bohemian neighborhood in the capital city.

a2207181568_a416c7b4f6_b

2 – How did you get started in the arts?
I´ve always loved drawing, since I was a kid. At a very young age I used to sit by mi cousin, who is a couple of years older, and try to imitate his drawings, with little success I may add.
I rediscovered the passion for drawing a couple of years ago, when I quit my former job in a web design studio, I was unemployed and had nothing else to do, so I started to draw again. And start to develop it for real.

b3101827325_1fbac92b48_b

3- Where do yo draw your inspiration from?
From everywhere, Fleischer cartoons, eastern religions, pulp magazines, vinyl discs, old toys, pop culture, classic artists, I don´t know, anything I can put my eyes on, basically.

c3113580764_64d7ab7fc2_o

4- Can you describe for us what a regular day is like for you?
I try to get up really early, like 7:30 am, fail to do so, get up at 9, get ready for work and leave.
I spend most of my day in the studio I work for, Peppermelon (www.peppermelon.tv) and then get back home where I do my personal stuff, nowadays, just paint and draw.

d3401258091_f36fb2cb84_b

5- What is your most common approach for completing a project?
Normally I start by making a lot of hand drawn sketches, when i´m happy with it, it´s time to scan it and work with vectors first and then I retouch it with a photo retouching software, but, lately, i´m starting to do a little old fashion, oil painting, but it´s not good enough to show it.

e3525751651_67dbf99d05_o

6- Out of all your work what is your favorite piece and why?
I like many pieces of my work, but I think the PSA of Spongebob squarepants we did for Mtv in Peppermelon, is one of my favorites, because it shows my style in motion, and really like it!
Obviously, I couldn´t do it, if it wasn´t for all the talented people from Peppermelon!

f3715677362_7d53f6dfa9_b

7- Is it easy to make a living in the work that you do?
No, it´s not that easy because there is a lot of good illustrators and designers doing great stuff, but is a nice competition, I like watching awesome stuff from other people, makes me want to be better.

g3963105052_3a722e2461_b

8- Who is your biggest influence?
I don´t have like a main influence, but i´d say Fleischer and 30s cartoons are something that marked me.

h4070878788_1569eb114e_b

9- How important is technology for the work that you do? What tools could you not live with out?
Nowadays, without a vectorizing software, but I´m exploring new paths.

10- How important is color in your work and why?
Very important, because I don´t normally use outline, so the color is the way I separate shapes, and also because I love color, I love powerful, eye catching colors.

11- Whats your favorite color?
Think it´s green. But I like them all.

12- Where can people get in contact with you?
By mail, at paijuano@yahoo.com.ar, or drop me a message in flickr, where you can see my personal work, at www.flickr.com/reymisterio
Also you can check the work of my homies at Peppermelon where there are a lot of talented people making sweet stuff, and me .

Thanks a lot for the time and investment in Colorvision!
Thanks to you, man.

Hello Malota and thank you for doing this interview with Colovision Magazine.

Thank you very much, it’s such a pleasure to answer your questions, I will try my best with my horrible english.

Mar

1 – To Start, tell us a bit about yourself where you were born and where you live…
I was born in Jaen, southern Spain, but I spent my childhood in Yecla, a small town in the province of Murcia.
Currently, and for nearly 11 years, I reside in Valencia, a city on the East Coast.

pajaro

2 – How did you get started in the arts?
I studied Fine Arts in Valencia, before doing this I used to go to drawing classes 3 to 4 hours every day.
My life has always been related to the arts, playing piano as a child, I always liked to draw and when I went to college I chose to study art because I have always liked.

malota-thefewgallery

3- Where do yo draw your inspiration from?
I think that inspiration is in many places, in other artists that you like in the movies, in music, but also a coffee with friends, a walk in the woods or in that tree leaf that slid in front of you while you were waiting for the bus.

malota-the-scarved-girl

4- Can you describe for us what a regular day is like for you?
My days are like those of others, I think there is nothing special.
I am currently moonlighting, I develop my work in the studio and also worked as an associate professor at the university, so my days are usually a non-stop.

malota-musician-fairy

5- What is your most common approach for completing a project?
For commercial projects:
First listen to what the customer wants,
after that, I try making a study of what has been done before similar.
In the end I make my proposal, revisions, changes …
I think the most important part is listening to customers, trying to understand and get that communication is very fluid at all times.
When it comes to personal work is easier, because I work in complete freedom, so the brief is what I impose.

ion-01

6- Out of all your work what is your favorite piece and why?
I think I can´t answer this question … it is very hard to pick one, all my projects have things I like and things that do not like.
Admittedly, I am more proud of some of them than others, but overall I’m proud. of all of them.
Most fondly remember what they’ve collaborated with other professionals, because often I learn with them.

indio

7- Is it easy to make a living in the work that you do?
It is difficult, but I think it is not more difficult than live differently, in my case, I must admit that I carry it pretty well, but I devote much time and effort.

hanako

8- Who is your biggest influence?
My influences are the things that I like: certain illustrators like Charley Harper and Tim Biskup, artists like Elvira h. Mateu, cinema, a walk, music, my friends, my family and so on, but my work is also influenced by my particular situation, my cultural background, being born in the West, in Spain, have been able to study what I liked, having had the opportunity to travel to certain places.
I personally believe that narrowing the influences that may have an illustrator to certain names is a mistake, because everything that has been part of our life has influenced to a greater or lesser extent and this is reflected in our work.

flist

9- How important is technology for the work that you do? What tools could you not live with out?

The tools have evolved over time, in recent decades have seen how digital technology advanced at a dizzying pace. Within the context of art and from my point of view, what matters is not the tool finally, the important thing is the messag (I understand art as a communicative act), so the tool is determined by what we have and how we want to.

Digital technology within the field of communication is fostering a kind of revolution and is very interesting to see how art adapts and uses all of these advances and new forms of communication to raise new and different proposals..

felt-toys

10- How important is color in your work and why?
Color is very important to me, there are projects in which I draw pretty fast and then spend time thinking about what colors I use. I believe that with the use of color can generate almost synaesthetic sensations, so if I want my artwork forward certain issues, many times I succeed by using certain colors.
Definitely the color is as important as the shape is in many cases.
11- Whats your favorite color?
I don’t have a favorite color, I think the color can not be assessed in isolation, with the development of many of my projects I’ve noticed how the perception of one color can be altered when this color go with others … well I could tell you is that I like a violet X provided that it is accompanied by a yellow and gray and Z.

1 – To Start, tell us a bit about yourself where you were born and where you live…
I was born in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras (Central America) in 1987 and I’m currently living in the same city just with my family, working as an illustrator and designer and studing graphic design at the same time.

2 – How did you get started in the arts?
I spent my childhood drawing, creating things and reading, which has kept my love for art throughout my life, but it was until over two years ago that I could focus on the illustration and make it my hobby, my work, and my passion. I started publishing my first works in my old blog, I can say that the comments and support of many readers, friends and family were also an important piece to discover that I want to be an illustrator.

the-messenger-of-love

3- Where do yo draw your inspiration from?
Music, beautiful things around, some movies (the more bizarre the better), unknown persons while walking on a street, the smell of coffee, love, loneliness, nostalgia, children’s stories and more. But in most cases it comes from music, I’m addicted it.

4- Can you describe for us what a regular day is like for you?
I usually try to get up early, taking a bath and a good strong coffee just with a heavy breakfast, and then try and make sure to plan my day and do my duty once to keep my mind clear while working. Then I check my mail and my news feed reader for daily inspiration and start to draw, paint, create new concepts and let ideas flow out. The rest is different every day.

the-blender

5- What is your most common approach for completing a project?
My focus is always make sure that every new project is much better than the last one.

6- Out of all your work what is your favorite piece and why?
I think my favorite was “The Messenger of Love is old n Tired”, this one emerged in a moment of sadness combined with enthusiasm and very deep feelings. It was like finding some humor in me in the midst of a difficult situation.

sungue-meets-selge

7- Is it easy to make a living in the work that you do?

Definitely No. The illustration industry in my country is very poor, there is little market for it and I have resolved to work with web design projects in most cases. But still, I love what I do, and not because I have to pay bills, I would completely dedicate this even If I would not earn enough to live comfortably. It was a hard job to take the decision to become a freelance illustrator, it requires hard work, consistent self promotion, enthusiasm and love for what I do, but even with everything, I enjoy it very much and am very happy to do so.

munnokiki

8- Who is your biggest influence?

My influences are mostly contemporary illustrators and artists working today, including: Dan May, Jim Bradshaw, Alex Dukal, Alberto Cerriteño, Adria Fruitos, Christopher Nielsen, Gustavo Aimar, Ana Bagayan, Mark Ryden, Jason Limon, and many others .

looking-for-truth

9- How important is technology for the work that you do? What tools could you not live with out?
Too much! I can say. I enjoy traditional techniques as well as the digital, but I love the freedom that you get with photoshop and that is very difficult to obtain with non-digital media, could not live without it and without my wacom tablet, of course.
10- How important is color in your work and why?
Very much! It’s my favorite way to convey feelings and direct approach through my drawings.

elijah-the-prophet

11- Whats your favorite color?
It depends of my mood, but in most cases it’s Aqua Green.

a-marvelous-flight

12- Where can people get in contact with you?
At my website/blog: www.wilmermurillo.com
Inside there are a lot of options where they can contact me. Thanks so much!
